The agreement, expected to be ratified by the end of September, comes after two years of negotiations over the contract, which expired June 30, 2014.

The negotiations came to a temporary halt in May when the Garfield Federation of Teachers declared an impasse due to what teachers said were limits imposed by the school board, northjersey.com reports.

The primary issue, GFT President Rob Barbier told northjersey.com, was an increase in insurance premiums while salaries remained flat, resulting in decreased take home pay for the 774 members of the union — a problem facing teachers throughout the state.
